North Island battered by heavy rain and winds

Torrential rain and thunderstorms hit parts of Northland, Auckland and tracking towards Waikato and Coromandel.

This morning Auckland recorded one of its wettest hours on record as a major thunder and lightning storm caused widespread flooding and chaos across the northern regions. More than 4000 lightning strikes have been recorded in one hour, with 700 in just five minutes.

Emergency services have been inundated with reports of flooding hundreds of Aucklanders and Northlanders are without power. The severe weather is now tracking down the North Island.

As a result of this damaging weather, we are mobilising resources as much as we can to assist with Priority 1 claims and emergency work.
